Most importantly for some, the cost of a number of cars will be greatly reduced under this new system. Cars with large engine sizes, but low emission levels will benefit the most through VRT and Motor Tax. The BMW 320 emits less CO2 than the Nissan Micra. Through the old system, the Micra would play less tax, as the engine size would dictate. But now, cleaner cars are benefiting the environment and the pockets of those who choose them. Emissions-based ratings may be flawed, but the environmental and financial benefits should keep the critics happy enough for the meantime. |

Consumers now have a choice between rewarding their pocket and affecting the environment. The decision is theirs. This will shift market demand, as seen in Finland where their government recently implemented the same type of emissions-based registration system. It is predicted that the sales of diesel engines will increase, as petrol-engine sales will drop dramatically. Currently, petrol-engine vehicles account for 80% of all new sales in Ireland, and diesel engines only account for 20%. This is set to change, as diesel takes over and other fuels, such as bio fuel, become available for consumption. |

Going green is a motto that is gripping the world. Regardless of the reasons, it has become a commercial message. A selling point for services and products. A topic that has generated many conversations. Ireland has been forging ahead with its environmental policy, from non-recycling bin charges to the smoking ban. The shift to a CO2 emissions-based system of tax is appropriate and expected. |
