Most importantly for some, the cost of a number of cars will be greatly reduced under this new system. Cars with large engine sizes, but low emission levels will benefit the most through VRT and Motor Tax. The BMW 320 emits less CO2 than the Nissan Micra. Through the old system, the Micra would play less tax, as the engine size would dictate. But now, cleaner cars are benefiting the environment and the pockets of those who choose them.

Emissions-based ratings may be flawed, but the environmental and financial benefits should keep the critics happy enough for the meantime.
