All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) are vehicles designed for any type of terrain. They were originally used on farms and for agriculture use, but have more recently been used for recreation, example quad bikes.

Block Exemption was an unwritten law between European car manufacturers. Under this rule, manufacturers would not sell cars to non-national consumers. This was to maintain the varied costs across Europe for the same vehicle. The EU has since banned this type of uncompetitive behaviour.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is a colourless, odourless gas that contributes to the greenhouse gas affect. It is emitted when fuel is burned.

Co2 Emissions Labelling System is the official name of the new VRT rating system. There are seven bands that rate vehicles on their CO2 Emissions, and range from A to G. The Irish Government will implement this new system in an effort to streamline the environmental affect of products in our society, under a system similar to that of white goods.

Kyoto Protocol
On 11th December 1997, the International Framework Convention on Climate Change agreed to a number of objectives that they recorded as the Kyoto Protocol. These objectives were related to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions that cause our climate to change. This protocol came into effect on 16 February 2005. The EU ratified this protocol, and Ireland is committed to reducing our national greenhouse gas emissions to 13% above our 1990 levels.

Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) is the expected retail price, including all taxes in the State, determined by the Revenue Commissioners.

Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumer tax. It is collected by VAT-registered traders on their supplies of goods and services.

Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is chargeable on registration of a motor vehicle in the State. All motor vehicles in the State, other than those brought in temporarily by visitors, must be registered with the Revenue Commissioners. A vehicle must be registered before it can be licensed for road tax purposes.
