If you feel that you were overcharged for the Vehicle Registration Tax when you registered your vehicle in Ireland, then there are two methods that you can go about by protesting the fees that you paid. You can challenge the fees when you register and you can file for an appeal. If you file for an appeal, then there is a process that you must follow in order for your appeal to be considered.

If you registered your imported or newly purchased vehicle in Ireland and you feel that the Vehicle Registration Tax was too high then you can challenge the fees right then. It is important that you do challenge the fees right then. Document what happens when you challenge it also. Be sure to talk to a supervisor or someone high level and have them reassess the value of the vehicle and see if you can get a lower rate. They might give you a lower rate for the tax or they might decline your request. It is worth a shot to have them reassess the taxes if you feel it is too high.

If you decide to appeal the cost of your Vehicle Registration Tax then there is a procedure that must be followed. First, only certain matters of the tax can be appealed. If you feel that the value of the vehicle is not as high as the Revenue Commission stated that your vehicle was then you can appeal this. However, you must pay the tax when registering and then go through the appeal process. If you received a refusal of repayment or refusal of granting an exemption and you feel that you are entitled to a relief from the tax or you are not required to pay it then you are eligible to file for an appeal.

When you file for an appeal you should be sure to have all of the required documentation in your possession. You will be given an initial decision in writing that will state the reasons why the determination has been made. You can ask for clarification from the Revenue Commissioners office that issued the decision if you are not satisfied. You should include your appeal in writing with all of the reasons you consider to be valid for your grounds for the appeal. You should include copies of the supporting documentation with your appeal.

Appeals are determined by the Revenue Commissioner’s office when they are pertaining to certain issues, if there is a disagreement with the determination of the open market selling price or the chargeable value. You might disagree with the classification of the vehicle and feel that it should be at a different vehicle category. The commission will consider category issues. They will also consider the amount of money charged for the Vehicle Registration Tax, de-registration of the vehicle, refusal of revoking the VRT authorization, and refusals of repayment. If a refusal of an exemption has occurred they will also consider this.

If you feel that you have paid too much for your Vehicle Registration Tax in Ireland for any of the reasons included above, then you can challenge the charges when you register or by filing an appeal. You must include the proven and required documentation and why you feel that you are being overcharged for the tax. It is better to file for an appeal then to pay way too much money for the tax. The Revenue Commission is aware that they have made mistakes and they are willing to assess requests and refund monies due to mistakes made on the tax. If you really feel that you have been wronged then you should file an appeal and get your money back.
