In considering moving to a more CO2 emissions related VRT system, either partly or fully, there are a number of issues that have to be taken into account, including reasons for making such a move on a phased basis over a period of years.

All motor vehicles, apart from those brought in temporarily by visitors, must be officially registered with the Revenue Commissioners in order to legally drive on Irish roads. A tax is charge on the vehicle through this registration, and is known as Vehicle Registration Tax or VRT.

When buying a new car in Ireland, the VRT is normally included in the price of the vehicles. Motor dealers are responsible for collecting the tax and registering the vehicle with the Revenue Commissioners before selling it on to consumers. On buying a new car from a dealership, the registration plates should already be fitted onto the vehicle before you drive it off the lot.

If you feel that you were overcharged for the Vehicle Registration Tax when you registered your vehicle in Ireland, then there are two methods that you can go about by protesting the fees that you paid. You can challenge the fees when you register and you can file for an appeal. If you file for an appeal, then there is a process that you must follow in order for your appeal to be considered.
